After several days and nights of rain here in Kona, it feels as though everything is hanging out to dry. The ti plants stretch out and upward.
The steep driveway is no longer a river of water and new plants are confidently sprouting.
Even the clouds look as though they've been bleached and tumble dried on high. You're looking good, Kona.
I can see and hear the surf at Lyman's and also see an occasional high splash up and down the coast so it looks like a promising weekend for ocean fun. What will you be doing?
The Keauhou Farmers Market pops up every Saturday morning at the north end of the Keauhou Shopping Center. Shopping starts at 8:00 a.m. and it's amazing how many people are there to line up for the one and only fish vendor.
I have a different route: live lettuce, fruits, flowers, maybe some chocolates from Elena or fresh juice from Lotus Cafe and I'm home in a little over a half hour. Last week, after I bought everything on my mental list, I took all of my bags to the car and went back with my camera and the intention of capturing what I thought was visually appealing. Fast shopping puts me in the "yes/no" mindset and I felt like going through the market in a more relaxed "and/and/and" mode.
I've walked past this tower of greens before and always thought it was a clever way to display lettuce.
Well, since I stopped to take a picture, I found out that it's a vertical garden. Plants are grown aeroponically. Unlike aquaponics, this system doesn't rely on live fish to provide the nutrients. Water and nutrients are cycled continuously through the tower and showered onto the roots.
I learned something new and bumped into someone I hadn't seen in years, Zac from Zac's Photo, who is the distributor here for the Tower Gardens. I'm checking this out because I'd love to grow my own herbs and vegetables in water and not worry about feeding the fish too little or too much. I remember guppies in a glass bowl. I do.

Did you know that when a bee finds a source of nectar she goes back to the hive and does a dance known as the waggle? The farther away the flower, the longer and more intricate the dance becomes. Unfortunately, the mutant Guava Bee does not dance, she blogs. She's here to tell you, there's sweetness somewhere on the Big Island of Hawaii.
