From: Friends of the Library, Kona (FOLK)
The Kona Library Book Club will meet on November 17th, at 11:00 AM on the lanai of the library. Our selection for November is “Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Exhausted and emaciated after attempting to climb K2 in the Himalayas, Mortenson was cared for by the impoverished people of a Pakistani village. He decided to return and build a school as his mission to counteract extremism.
The book’s central theme is based around the sharing of tea. The first time you are a stranger, the second time, you are an honored guest, the third time you become family. This is the story of one man’s efforts to address poverty, overcome cultural divides, and educate girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson suggests educating girls has more of a lasting benefit for their community. They tend to remain in the community and pass on their enhanced knowledge to the next generation.
“Three Cups of Tea” reveals the obstacles to overcoming cultural divides and becoming “family.” The book is captivating and suspenseful!
Light refreshments will be served. New attendees are invited to become members of both our Book Club and our sponsor, Friends of the Libraries, Kona, (F.O.L.K.).
