SUNDAY JULY 12 New Thought Center, Kealakekua at 10am
Morning Raga by Sarangi Master Parashuram Bhandari of Nepal
with Babette Ackin on Tamboura
Donations to New Thought Center Appreciated
Parashuram Bhandari is a Sarangi Master from Kathmandu, Nepal. He brings over twenty years of experience to the Sarangi. Many in America are awed by the difficulty of playing the Sarangi, a bowed instrument with thirty-nine strings. The Sarangi is an ancient relative of the violin unknown to most westerners whose name means "hundred colors" (sau-rangi). The Sarangi is revered for its emotional intensity created by its sound as it combines a cello-like timbre with a reverberating bright echo. Parashuram inspires audiences to hear those "hundred colors" through his masterful playing and through the bright echo of his own cultural heritage and dedication to his art.
Babette Ackin first experienced sacred devotional Hindustani Music (Indian Classical) about ten years ago when reknowned vocalist Pt. Mukesh Desai presented a "Spiritual Potential of Sound Workshop" at an Iyengar yoga studio in Houston, Texas. She is grateful to her tamboura teacher for his patience, dedication and inspiration. Babette is Founding Director of the Indian Classical Music Circle of Hawaii.
